I've been using these things since the eighties, I'm presently working
on some features I hope to contribute to gnome. I really like the gnome
desktop, but on this whole "spatial" issue I feel for you. It's a stupid
idea to make it default, and the way the "gnome community" talks about
it proves this time and again. They talk up this usability guideline,
but every time someone criticizes the "spatial" nonsense the argument
is "people just need to be educated..."

I'm no idiot. I have 20 years experience in this industry, and that's
just counting the time I was paid for it. I've read at least four
papers on how great this spatial mode is, and not one of them made a
compelling and logical case. I've tried using it myself (several times)
and in every case it's just harder without being better in any way.

If Steve Jobs had adopted such an attitude Macs sure wouldn't be the
revered creatures they are, and Jobs wouldn't be where he is today.
Again: I really like the gnome desktop - but this whole "spatial"
discussion just reeks of dogma on the part of the gnome corps. It's too
bad, as great as ubuntu is, the core developers on the project couldn't
take a stand against such dogma and provide users an even friendlier
-OOTB- desktop.
