Oops, sorry!
The image had not installed correctly since I had to muck about with
dpkg --force-overwrite on acpi-support when it tried to
overwrite /etc/acpi/events/powerbtn ... 

Still there is the question about linux-restricted-modules-2.6.9-1-386
though...
