Is there a memory bloat issue with ubuntu library compilation?

Doing some test with slackware and gentoo, I see a 50% memory usage
difference between those and ubuntu.

Firefox on Slackware/Gentoo uses 41MB total memory, on ubuntu it's 89MB
when freshly started.

Since the other distributions isn't compiled for optimal memory usage,
I'm wondering if something isn't being done wrong with the compilation
of ubuntu library packages to create this huge difference.
