There is a bug that is preventing me from sending mail from within
evolution. It turns out that it is already registered at ximian's
bugzilla.
http://bugzilla.ximian.com/show_bug.cgi?id=70837

When configuring the outgoing mail server (SMTP) "server requires
authentication" checkbox does not save the changes. As a result it is
impossible to send mail via an smtp server which requires authentication.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Open "Tools"/"Configuration"
2. Edit an account
3. Go to the fourth tab "Outgoing mail" / "sending mail"
4. Check the "Servers requires authentication" checkbox
5. Click "OK"
6. Repeat steps 1 to 3: The checkbox is unchecked
