The problem appears to be related to 'gnome-terminal'. I'm running
Fedora Core 3 at work, and experienced the very same problem with or
without 'screen' involved (it's one of many things that FC3 broke over
here). Running 'mutt' from inside an 'xterm' works just fine though. At
home, using warty I experience no problem either. Here is the information
about the packages causing the problem under Fedora, in case it is of any
help:

$ rpm -q gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal-2.7.3-1

$ rpm -q screen
screen-4.0.2-5

$ rpm -q mutt
mutt-1.4.1-10
