Why not simply rename the menu "Files" ? Files are the common
denominator between directories, mounted devices, recent files and file
search.

Here a other Files (or keep Places if you do not like Files :) ) menu I
suggest:

Files
    Home
    Desktop
    [Personal GtkFileChooser Bookmarks]
    ---
    Computer
    [Mounted disks]
    ---
    Network
    Connect to a server...
    [Connected networks]
    ---
    Search for Files...
    Recent Documents

Where [Mounted disks] and [Connected networks] the list of currently
mounted things. I really like the Ubuntu clean desktop way (no default
icon on it) but I also disable connected hosts to appear. But I think
they still have to be listed somewhere you can easily access and the
Files (remember, it is the name I try to give to Places menu) menu may
be the best place.

Remark, for usability, I think if dynamic items ([] ones) reach a
certain number, they as to be in a sub menu as the "Open with" behaviour
in Nautilus.
