I had this exact problem some weeks ago (XFS + Hoary 2.6.8.1 kernel). I
was getting those I/O errors every time I started MySQL server. Plus
corrupted /var/lib/dpkg/status (filled with zeros). It's curious that
every time i got the same file corrupted.

I checked my disk with Seagate's tool and it didn't report any errors. I
also memtest86+'ed my system for several hours.
Now I don't run mysql, but from time to time xfs_check reports
filesystem errors, but no I/O errors, file corruption or forced reboots.
I asked on IRC but no one there had similar problems. I'll install mysql
in a few minutes and see if it causes problems with Hoary 2.6.9 kernel.
