Recent Ubuntu GNOME updates negatively affect Xinerama users

It's getting worse.  I just upgraded to the latest hoary packages and
now metacity is broken to the point where the maximize button streches
the window right across all available desktops.

It was kind of annoying before with the login screen and panel, but
this is un-usable.  Is there any way to fix this manually? Can I
re-compile replacements myself and just drop them in? will doing this
break apt?
