Personally I really like the "disk mounter" applet which I didn't know
until experimenting with Ubuntu. I have installed in my top panel one
disk mounter applet for each of of CD Drives, then turned off the
automounter. If I insert a CD in either drive I simply click on the
icon to mount it, and click again to umount (and eject). Maybe that
applet could be defined and then appear by default in the top panel
instead of having a CD icon in the nearly-empty desktop when mounting
cd-roms (and something similar for each other type of mountable
medias)
Personally I find this applet in the top panel more user-friendly, and
more in line with the "goal" (is it an official goal?) of Ubuntu of
keeping the desktop clear.
