I have a little comment... hopefully nothing too long. Note that I'm
no developer.

How about the menu structure of "Applications, Places, Options,
System". I like your idea for Applications and Places. I was thinking
since you said that "Recent Documents" and "Search for Files" doesn't
fit in with Places, maybe separate it into an Options menu (or maybe
name it "Tasks"). You could also put "Take Screenshot", Help, Lock
Screen, and Log Out here, as they seem more the "Tasks" you'd like to
do with your desktop. Then add the System menu in the end, but only
put in the configuration tools there. Maybe make the System menu into
a little "Configuration" icon of some sort.

I hope my paragraph above makes sense. And since it seems that it's
now possible to add dynamic devices into the menu... would it be
possible to add then to what I called the Options/Tasks menu, with the
option to "Eject" or "Format" or "Import" depending on the device?
Something like:

Tasks
   Devices
      CDROM - Eject
      USB Flash - Format, Eject
      Camera - Import, Format, Eject
   ---
   Recent Documents
   Search for Files
   ---
   Take Screenshot
   Help
   ---
   Lock Screen
   Log Out

I know the top part probably sounds a little too much, but it does
save the hassle of having to show the desktop, or opening a
Computer:/// window just to eject removable devices. "Recent
Documents" still doesn't seem right in that menu, but the rest seem
more like "Tasks" you'd do with/in the overable desktop rather than
places or system.
