Ubuntu install on laptop failed repeatedly

this page indicates that you may need the pci=noacpi bootoption on many
dell laptops (and sice the problems occures after first boot, this
probably also applys to you):

also did you check the CD ? there is an option for that in the boot
menu, just in case your desktop cdrom has a better error correction for
bad tracks :)
