Installer dependency is now ttf-indic-fonts-core which contains 2010 version of fonts , totally outdated due to change in opentype specification and support for new rendering engines . For Malayalam , Meera04 and Rachana04 need to be removed from that package and installer dependency for Malayalam need to be set to fonts-smc-meera (whichyou can take from PPA)

2. All Malayalam Language support now points ttf-malayalam-fonts , Please change it to fonts-smc and if possible include fonts-smc to main repo . Indian Language fonts in ubuntu hasnt uodated after 2010 . Debian moved to fonts-<foundry> naming and removed all ttf-<languagename>-fonts packages . Now Ubuntu is having many of these packages ported from Debian . eg . For Malayalam fonts-smc and ttf-malayalam-fonts contains same fonts but fonts-smc is the latest version . But all language setup points to the older version of fonts

ttf-indic-fonts-core having mostly outdated fonts (installer dependency) and it results rendering fail . This is crucial for Indian languages because with the emergence of harfbuzz as a rendering stack , and update in opentype V2 for fonts , old version of fonts produces rendering issues .

So please consider this as high priority and fix it on 15.04

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/958345
