I agree! I'm using openbox, no desktop environment at all. You can
easily write a script that users of certain distros can use to get a
desktop similar to GNOME 2, or even better, e.g. based on openbox or
jwm.
However, you need to maintain a theme that makes GTK 2 as well as 3+ and
other apps look pleasant. Maintaining this is a lot of work, I know what
I'm talking about.
I dislike stuff like the MATE Desktop Environment, but maybe you like
it? AFAIK it comes with all that software I've abandoned from my
machines, such as gvfs or pulseaudio, but it might be still close to
GNOME 2.
