Why is Linux desktop not popular among non-programmers?

I don't think that is true in general (even if it is probably true for
some developers). E.g. a company like Collabora (which pays a number
of LibreOffice developers) sells services to companies that use linux
desktops; if they didn’t listen to their customers they would not be
very happy.

LibreOffice is a competitor for several Linux Foundation members that
offer commercial office software solutions (at least 3 at first glance,
probably more), including Google & Microsoft.
Why would they pay/help to improve a free competitor?

Microsoft is a platinum member of the Linux Foundation (meaning they
pay a larger membership fee than Google). "Defeat Microsoft" is not a
project/goal they will accept...
