Why is Linux desktop not popular among non-programmers?

This is correct. Also, many companies actually don't need Microsoft
Windows and Apple. They would very much like to cut costs. I have
worked for a few companies whose products were in linux but they had
Windows desktop. Other than checking emails in Outlook and writing
some 50 pages documents, there was nothing else to do on Windows.
These companies would definitely like to use linux desktops and stop
paying to MIcrosoft/Apple. There is a lot of scope for linux desktops
if the linux desktop marketing team gets involved with the companies
and asks them what they want. And if those things are delivered then
the chances are very high of getting more money/funding.

By linux desktops, I mean GNOME and KDE and the accompanying desktop
software applications.

Google, Nvidia, Cisco, Broadcom, Juniper Networks, etc. don't need Windows/Mac.

Also, most of the non-programmers (possibly 80%) use Windows/Mac only
for browsing the web and writing some documents. Banking is different
because they use spreadsheets heavily and LibreOffice is not up to it.
But in the majority of cases, people (programmers + non-programmers)
don't need Windows/Mac.

I have myself switched from Windows to Linux and I am not missing
anything (but then I am a programmer so I can handle current linux
desktops, but may be non-programmers would find the current linux
desktops a little difficult).

If you do something right, then money will come to you.

As far as I know, the salary of Linus Torvalds is $1 million per year.
And as far as I know, 22-24 years ago he was probably not paid at all
(before he joined Transmeta).

My point is this - if you want to raise money then you have to talk to
your target customers/companies and do what they ask for.

Amit
