I think this is quite a misleading statement in this context. He's using
16.04, which is supported until 2021. Using Unity is fine if he can get
it to work for him. That it's discontinued upstream is no reason to
switch on 16.04, which remains fully supported.

Of course, the nvidia support is a separate issue. If it's easier to
make some other desktop environment work for you, that's a separate
matter :)
