Software installation on modern Ubuntu

Very helpful (and eye-opening) discussion of installation issues - thanks.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I'll note my favorite, the first install I make on new systems:
wajig (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wajig) for command-line installs.

It combines the confusing array of apt-* commands into one unified command, auto-invokes sudo when necessary, and much more.
