I follow this list with a daily digest mode, so if you want one answer please CC me or wait until I read the message :)

Unfortunately skype is a blackbox so I don't know too much about the protocol behind, anyway you can see in the bug what stopped working withe the old version, and the following comments shows some more stuff.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/skype/+bug/1280109/comments/9

What I wrote wasn't my personal knowledge about skype, my intention was to say something really simple:
-debian decision was to avoid skype in the repository.
-ubuntu's one was to include it.

I don't complain about one decision or the other, it is open source, so anyone should be able to install it or remove it because of the FOSS alternatives (I don't use skype too much).

The problem is: if you want to give skype in one repository _please_ give a good skype experience, and _no_, updating skype the last day because of the protocol update (in my stupid and n00b opinion) is not a good user experience, since not everybody triggers daily updates, and this is proven because many people complained the following days about problems.

So in my personal and stupid opinion one user should have at least one week to upgrade the software before the break of the protocol.

BTW the bug was reported something like 6 months ago, and the debdiff was somewhat trivial http://launchpadlibrarian.net/181344268/skype_4.2.0.11-0ubuntu0.12.04.2_4.3.0.37-0ubuntu0.12.04.1.diff.gz

So, sorry if I cannot give you more details ;)

cheers,

Gianfranco

(a loving ubuntu OS, and partner repository, missing acroread, but still using skype from repo)
