Location of installed files

The Ubuntu Software manager does not tell users where to find the files that
are installed using that service (neither does Synaptic).
I would like to know at least where I could find an application in case I
have a file that I want to open with a specific application (and can not
find it in the list that opens when I right click and choose "Open With >
Other Application"). I.e. what do I write in that "Custom command" field...
