What piece of software in Ubuntu could be easily optimized?

Hello,

I am student at Warsaw University and I am doing the classes about the
software optimization.

For the final project we have to optimize any piece of open source program.

I have been using Ubuntu since always so I thought that I could ask this
question here.

Are there any programs in Ubuntu into which I could look into and try to do
some optimizations?

I am looking for programs, which are slower than they should be, and on the
other hand there wasn't done excessive work to improve it.
