That is because the kernel of 9.04 has this known unfixed grave bug that eats
filesystems.

I hit the problem myself on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop.

The solution is either to use 9.10 or directly install a fresh kernel
before the first reboot! (i would even switch the machine just off after
a sync and not shut it down)
