[Slightly OT] Packaging question

My printer died on me and so I got a new printer, a Canon PIXMA iP2500.

My system recognised it, but steadfastly refused to print to it. I went
to the Canon site, but the only driver I could get for Linux was a
Fedora .rpm. I installed alien to convert it to a .deb, but that
baulked because it was for i386 not the amd64 that I have. So I unpacked
it (alien -g) and tried to compile it using my 64-bit compiler. Much
frustration later, still no driver.

Could anyone her point me to a (relatively easy) way to convert am i386
.rpm source package to a x64_64 binary .deb? Or do I have a nice new
shiny paperweight?
