Message notifier: Why a panel applet?

The status area really provides very little in the way usability.  Each
icon in the notification area behaves very differently and has different
actions based on how you click on it.  Also, they work together very
poorly.

While there is a cross desktop spec it isn't really useful for most what
we're trying to accomplish.  We plan on making a KDE version of the
messaging indicator, but unfortunately we're not going to be able to
deliver that for Jaunty.
