Well, currently you can keep a terminal window open and run screen in
it, using one of the new ubuntu-* screen profiles provided by the
'screen-profiles' package...  :-P

Now seriously, I agree that we need 'update-notifier' back, or at least
the part that displays the "there are new updates" and "you need to
reboot" icons.
If I have to change an option somewhere to get them that's okay, but
just like you *I want to see this _very important_ information*.
