How to crypt ?

What is the solution, officially supported by Ubuntu, to encrypt and 
automatically mount an external hard drive?
Because you can find all kinds of ways to proceed.
cryptsetup/ecryptfs/truecrypt...

I look for the encryption solution that is the most secure and easiest 
to implement (on Ubuntu) while being sustainable over time.
