I agree that it's not reasonable to expect people to do that.
However, there have been seven Ubuntu releases since the bug was
reported, so it's not credible to suggest that the bug be "a release
stopper".

That would be an excellent idea.
If you are not able to implement this yourself, one small thing you
could do is find the correct bugzilla.mozilla.org bug report to link to
the Launchpad bug report. The bug report currently linked is about
something quite different.
