I ended up bind-mounting the sasl2 password file into the chroot.
Then it worked fine.

A better sysadmin-experience out of the box would be certainly nice.
I don't know if the mailing list is the best place to suggest that, it's
rather ephemeral.  Perhaps you'd like to put it on
