Compiling vlc in a chroot environment

Hello,
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 32bit and created a chroot environment for Ubuntu
8.04 32bit to
build vlc 0.8.6h inside it.

Unfortunately, the build process terminated because of this error:
make[5]: *** No rule to make target `am--refresh'. Stop.

So I decided to first try to build the sources of vlc 0.8.6e from the
repositories.
But the build process terminated giving the same error message there.

You can see the full log of sbuild in the attachment.

I did not change the sources, just grabbed it with "apt-get source vlc".
Inside the chroot environment just the essential packages for
compilation are installed.
(wget debconf devscripts gnupg nano fakeroot cdbs build-essential)

I think if the problem is solved for 0.8.6e it will also be for 0.8.6h.
