LTS to LTS upgrade path

Since installing Dapper for several clients I've been wondering about
the path they need to take to migrate to the next LTS. (I realise that
there is a whole different discussion here about whether they should
upgrade or not - but at some stage that discussion stops when security
upgrades are no longer released.)

While I can imagine going on-site with a DVD with Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy
and Hardy CD iso files and doing the upgrade one at a time, this is
really not that appropriate, nor is it something that I could imagine an
end-user achieving without lots of headaches.

There is this spec:

    * https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/lts-upgrades
    * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTSUpgrades

This is what I'm talking about, but there does not appear to be a lot of
activity (yet). As subscribers to this spec go, I'm it at the moment.
The author is Michael Vogt and it was approved by Scott James Remnant.

Now I understand that resources are limited and that we're a little way
away from needing this functionality, but if I look back at the gap
between Edgy and Feisty, it was all over way too soon, so I suspect that
it would be useful to start some discussion about this.

I'm happy to stick up my hand to help.
