Checking /usr/local/ before upgrading

Everyone can answer on this list with what is their personal opinion, so
why are you surprised to to hear any particular opinion?   :)

FWIW: I agree that it's probably a good idea to make sure the installer
doesn't use "unknown" libraries during an upgrade...
