Perhaps you could start by investigating whether a Free driver that 
works for other Lexmark printers
<http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=Lexmark> could be 
extended to cover the X6170 too. Either way, the OpenPrinting site is 
probably the best place to get involved with driver development.
