esd will still be used in gutsy.  Whether it's also used in gutsy+1 (the
next LTS) remains in the air.  PulseAudio should be a fairly
straightforward drop-in in its current state; Edubuntu has been using it
since feisty.  libflashsupport is the most significant missing piece,
and pavucontrol should be promoted to main.

However, PulseAudio is not a panacea.  There are significant ALSA issues
that must be resolved first (a dizzying mixer element complexity, the
flux of HDA codec drivers, non-intuitive multichannel configuration,
state file obsoletion between kernel versions, etc.).
