I don't see how that helps.. How is it easier to modify multiple
packages instead of modifying one package?

Even still, i see where you are going with this. Depending on generic
names would allow packages to be replaced with other packages without
modifying the meta package. Since the meta package is created by a
script, the task of modifying or creating a new meta package shouldn't
be too much of a trouble.
