Thanks to extraordinary efforts from David Miller, the Ubuntu SPARC team and the
entire Linux-on-SPARC community, it should now be possible to test out the
complete Ubuntu installer and environment on Niagara machines. As of today, the
unofficial community port of Ubuntu to SPARC should be installable on Niagara,
and we would love to hear reports of success or failure (and love them more if
they come with patches for performance or features :-)).

For those of you not in the loop, the Niagara processor is massively multi-core
and multi-threaded by design, and presents a number of very interesting
technical challenges from a Linux perspective.

A netbootable image is available here:

http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/dapper/main/installer-sparc/current/images/sparc64/netboot/2.6/boot.img

Sometime soon we'll have a CD installer for SPARC as well. This installer work
uses D-I and so will be available in Debian in due course too.

Please note, that SPARC is not one of the officially supported Ubuntu platforms,
but there is a lot of community interest in the work and we welcome your
participation to help make Dapper a SPARC release that is widely usable.

Please submit bugs and join our IRC porting community channel.

The Ubuntu UltraSPARC Porting Team wishes to thanks a lot of people (in no
particular order) for their cooperation:

David S. Miller for all the coding and debugging.

Ben Collins for integrating Niagara support in the Ubuntu kernel.

Matthias Klose likewise for gcc and gcj.

Jeff Bailey likewise for glibc.

Colin Watson for suffering through our most atrocious installer
             questions and weird requests.

Adam Conrad for babysitting so closely the 3 Sparc build daemons to speed up the
            overall process.

On behalf of the team,
Fabio M. Di Nitto
