I'm not sure what the final fix will be since servers' and desktops'/laptops' ideal default seem to be different, but most likely the certification tests should be adjusted if we don't end up restoring the previous behaviour of the ondemand.service unconditionally. The latest LTS release, 20.04 is not affected so the certification test changes are probably not very urgent. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885730 Title: Bring back ondemand.service or switch kernel default governor for pstate - pstate now defaults to performance governor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1885730/+subscriptions From 1885730 at bugs.launchpad.net Mon Aug 3 15:26:50 2020 From: 1885730 at bugs.launchpad.net (Balint Reczey) Date: Mon, 03 Aug 2020 15:26:50 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1885730] Re: Bring back ondemand.service or switch kernel default governor for pstate - pstate now defaults to performance governor References: <159352688254.17851.15321674256290339177.malonedeb@soybean.canonical.com> Message-ID: <159646841028.2438.11952520095083001532.launchpad@gac.canonical.com> ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: systemd (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu Focal) Status: New => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885730 Title: Bring back ondemand.service or switch kernel default governor for pstate - pstate now defaults to performance governor To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1885730/+subscriptions From 1885730 at bugs.launchpad.net Wed Aug 26 10:28:00 2020 From: 1885730 at bugs.launchpad.net (Julian Andres Klode) Date: Wed, 26 Aug 2020 10:28:00 -0000 Subject: [Bug 1885730] Re: Please switch default, hwe, oem kernel flavours governor to CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND=y , such that advanced userspace utilities such as game-mode can be later used to rev-up to to performance, or rev-down to powersave. A CPU with HWP (hardware P-states) behaves as you'd expect sort of - it runs at close to max frequency all the time, and scales down extremely in non-performance modes. It scales up and down faster than older models, given that HWP does the frequency scaling inside the CPU. Disabling HWP gives you X220-style old scaling which is slower, and does not go as far down as the HWP scaling. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885730 Title: Please switch default, hwe, oem kernel flavours governor to CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND=y , such that advanced userspace utilities such as game-mode can be later used to rev-up to to performance, or rev-down to powersave.
