Better Maintenance of IBus, i.e., the Input Framework

"ibus" package, as a main package, has ridiculously 85 open bugs.
http://packages.qa.debian.org/ibus

Though many of the bugs are outdated, it is easy to check that there
is no single developer response for many of them.

Poorly implemented application indicator support of IBus has caused
problem since the introduction of Unity in 11.04.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/875435
The problem is a blocking one. Since missing indicator means everything is gone.

IBus upstream is working on 1.5 branch which removed and changed some
feature to accommodate GNOME Shell.
So what about Unity?
Do we follow the IBus 1.5 path?
Or we fork and maintain IBus 1.4?
Or even more radical, find a new input framework?
