There are several issues with gdm3 in Ubuntu, one of which has to do
with the locale. Please try using a different login screen: lightdm is
currently the default for 11.10. Also, the correct way to fix Gnome 3
PPA bugs now is to fix them in Oneiric since the Oneiric packages are
getting downsynced to the PPA.

So, please check to see if this is still an issue in Oneiric. Note that
Oneiric still has gdm 2 in the repositories; gdm 3 has not been packaged
good enough to go in yet.
