Feature add-ons for gnome-volume-control-applet

I know that users can switch audio devices through GUI (pavucontrol and gnom-volume-control). But I want to make it even more convenient (or potentially annoying) by showing a dialog automatically whenever a new audio device is connected.. My reasoning is that if an user connects a new audio device intentionally, the user is most likely planning to use it. So, why not allow the user to select the device without having to click anything.

Yeah, I should have talked on this mailing list before I started on this stuff. I did talk to Mario Limonciello (client Ubuntu engineer at Dell) and Jerone Young (works at Canonical). They are trying to make the user experience better with Bluetooth headsets/headphones in Ubuntu by making sure they "just work" for a novice user. So, I am trying to make user experience with bluetooth audio better.

I agree! First time working with the open source community, lesson learned.

I am aware that in the gnome-volume-control you can select the desired audio device by opening the preferences dialog. However, my plan was to automate the switching process. For example, if a laptop user wants to use a particular Bluetooth headset very often, and turns off the laptop after every use, the user will have to go to the preferences dialog every time to select the headset as the output/input device. The problem is that after a user preferred audio device disconnects, the system defaults to one of the available devices (which is normal). But after the user preferred device reconnects, it does not switch automatically without having to specify manually each time. It would make sense to "remember" a preferred input/output device, so that user does not have to repeatedly select it every time.
