Memory usage desktop background

This doesn't fit my normal thinking of bugs.
The desktop background in hardy takes up 50 Mb on fresh boot (30 something
on 32 bit).  Isn't that a bit excessive?  I am not sure what if anything can
be done about it.

Reproduce:
Boot with default background, note memory usage
Turn it to blank color, reboot, note memory usage

I do like the new background, btw.
