replacing Unix with Ubuntu

Well, the cost would really be nothing.  And I'm not sure you need
familiarize yourself with as much as you htink.  the command line will
be almost identical.  ubuntu has all the commands a basic unix system
has any then some.

Are you going to have 5000 users run ubuntu desktops?  What is your
server actually doing?  I've got a lot of users here using ubuntu
desktops.  check out ltsp for info on that sort of system.
