I must admit that it can be confusing if you are used to the old button
but after a day or two I must admit it's starting to make sense.

In my opinion it actually IS a button. When you click on it, a menu
appears. For somebody who has never used linux/ubuntu it would probably
make more sense this way. A "flat" logo on a bar is not a logical thing
to click on for finding a menu. A user could just think it's some sort
of decoration instead of being something you're actually supposed to
click on. Don't forget: some people, like me, don't have the "menu bar"
but just the "main menu", which is actually just the logo we are talking
about. In this configuration it makes even more sense to display it as a
button opposed to a design/decoration.

Another possibility would be to give "main menu" the old design (flat)
and make the "menu bar" (just the logo) the new button version.
