Geht auch ohne ;-). Vermutlich ein DNS-Problem.

In diesem Fall lag es daran, dass localhost falsch aufgelöst wurde.
(Macht auch Sinn da Du an ppoeconf gedreht hast).

Dem Nutzer oben hat geholfen in /etc/nsswitch.conf den Eintrag über dns
nach hinten sortiert.
Bei mir sieht die hosts Zeile so aus:
hosts:          files dns mdns
Und bei Dir?

P.S.: Falls das nichts hilft: CUPS schreibt ein hübsches log
nach /var/log/cups/error_log bzw. acess_log. Vielleicht steht da mehr.
