Nur um was einzustreuen:

o proprietär: xnview, compupic (rote Augen entfernen), picasa (ganz 
nett, interessantes ui/usability)

o commandline: feh 
 feh is a fast, lightweight image viewer which uses imlib2. It is
 commandline-driven and supports multiple images through
 slideshows, thumbnail browsing or multiple windows, and montages
 or index prints (using TrueType fonts to display file info).
 Advanced features include fast dynamic zooming, progressive
 loading, loading via HTTP (with reload support for watching
 webcams), recursive file opening (slideshow of a directory
 hierarchy), and mouse wheel/keyboard control.

o speziell: imgSeek (Ähnlichkeitssuche! Contend Based Image Retrieval, 
CBIR)
Description: Image viewer and manager with content based query
 ImgSeek is a photo collection manager and viewer with content based 
search
 and many other features.

 The search query for an image is expressed either as a rough sketch

o gimp unterstütz ja auch Bildbearbeitung per commandline (afair), da 
wäre es interessant, ob das red eye plugin auch in dem shell modus 
funktioniert, oder ob es so etwas für graphics-/Imagemagick gibt ;-) .
