I joined Meetup a year or so back because a project I was working with at the
time was using it. I've explored a bit but found it very little used (in the UK
at least). I think 3 of the groups I joined have fizzled, another is on the way
and one other is actively migrating out. The only one that actually did much is
the one that is migrating out onto their own platfrom. I wouldn't expect it to
encourage more participation if it is another thing to join.

That said, I may not be the target audience. My primary means of support and
participation is via mailing lists. I used to do a lot of support for a project
on lists and irc and when it moved to forums my participation fizzled because I
rarely remembered to visit.
