Ubuntu HTTP mirror redirector?

Hi,

This probably comes to entirely wrong place, but maybe someone can
forward me or this email to correct place, but anyway...

Debian has http://httpredir.debian.org/ which is used as mirror in
sources.list and then it forwards you to the mirror it thinks is the
best for you. I think it could also benefit Ubuntu and as far as I am
aware Debian and Ubuntu aren't so different that it couldn't workt at al
l.

For example in Finland there local mirror went down due to disk server
issue and I have been following both Ubuntu and Debian Finland
channels. Ubuntu Finland tells people to move to Swedish mirror while
Debian Finland tells people to use httpredir.debian.org. Both
distributions use the same mirror server.

I am aware of mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/ but as you can see,
httpredir.debian.org has advatanges over it and it has one quite big
issue of often saying "E: Method gave invalid 103 Redirect message"
(<http://pad.lv/1479045>) during `apt-get update` and requiring `cd
/var/lib/apt/lists && rm * && cd partial && rm * && cd` and requiring
`apt-get update` again, so I don't think it can be recommended to new
users.

PS. Sorry if this comes twice, Thunderbird is again complaining about
timeouts with SMTP server.
