Thanks that did help, it seems the issue is teasing out what goes into:
~/.profile, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bashrc

The issue is due to bash not reading .bashrc for login shells along
with the following common advice: load .bashrc file in .bash_profile
Then place something you "always" want to run in .bashrc .... :(
