I certainly agree there is a lot of marketecture going around these
days, and I see cloud computing more as a evolution than a revolution,
but there is significantly more value to cloud computing than developing
a new software delivery channel. Amazon, Eucalytpus, Canonical,
Ubuntu...these are the guys that are doing the cloud today, specifically
Infrastructure-as-a-Service. I would support your statements when
looking at Platform-as-a-Service and Software-as-a-Service offerings
from the likes of Google and Microsoft, but the U.S. Government didn't
just order "cloud first" because they were caught up by the sales pitch.
There are tremendous savings to be realized and not just by the bankers,
but by all of us who are subsidizing giant space heaters disguised as
data centers with our tax dollars. The hard money answer to cloud
computing is that is allows us to share hardware and therefore achieve a
level of efficiency that only the big guys can. The cloud is the
commiditization of our information infrastructure. The reason it sounds
like a sales pitch is because it is slightly complicated. For a less
