Interestingly, I had the same problem with my Canon camera on my desktop with karmic. It didn't show up in fdisk -l and I tried to guess the /dev/sd? to try to mount it, no luck. After a few days of that, I went out and bought a cheap usb adapter for the card, works great. I assumed it was a camera issue since I didn't have this problem with my nikon coolpics.
Before rebooting, have you tried to mount the camera manually?

Assuming that your disk drive is at /dev/sda1, assuming that the block device for your camera is at /dev/sdb1 (?) you could try something like:

sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera

Assuming that the folder (mount point) /mnt/camera exists.

If it simply can't see the usb device, you could try inserting that manually as well before you type the command above by typing:

sudo modprobe usb-storage

Cheers!
I have an AspireOne - using it to reply to this thread. I took XP off and replaced it with Karmic using its USB port. Everything works great except - I have to restart to get it to see my camera's SD card. Weird.
