Just an FYI....I have had an Audigy2ZS for the past few years.

Been reading various forums/lists/sites to see if I could get consistent sound out of it. Sometimes shows up under Pulse, sometimes ALSA, sometimes the basic one never the same twice in a row and it always changed if i actually used a program that used it and closed the program.

So far, no successful fixes(Creative apparently doesn't release much info on their Audigy hardware, so I'm not blaming anyone in the community). I eventually gave up and just pulled the Audigy out....It's sitting on the top of my tower now, until I come across a magical fix....Onboard sound works just fine, so I've been quite happy since I pulled the card out.

Your experience may be different, but you more than likely do have something onboard, just in case that's all it is.

Alternatively, if your card was a recent purchase, you might try the ALSA site...they have a compatibility listing. Some of the Creative products seem to work just fine.
Eugene Just received your e-mail. Will give you some answers now,
some later. On boot-up, there are 2 sounds. The first is a "drum roll"
when the log-in screen appears. After you log-in, the log-in screen
disappears, and you hear 2-3 seconds of the sound of deep jungle drums
(I have referred to them as African drums). These are the 2 sounds at
log-in that I used to hear with Ubuntu 7.10. Since I sometimes get the
"drum roll" sound with 8.04, I assumed that there should also be an
"African drum" sound in 8.04 as well. In my just-completed installation
of 8.04, there is "system - admin - hardware testing (third
line from top) - testing detected sound card". I just looked again and
it is there! I tried only ALSA (which is default under 8.04) and
PulseAudio because those were the only 2 options discussed on a "help"
site I visited some months ago. If you now want me to try some of the
other options, I will. My Soundblaster Audigy card is PCI. I don't know
if there is also an on-board motherboard soundcard, but I will check.
Will also check-out your other suggestions. George Borusiewich
