HPLIP very nicely implements most if not all of printer and scanner management functions, and XSane does very well with multi-page scans if your machine has an ADF (automatic docs feeder). I have owned Brother and Samsung printers and they're very nice and cheap but all use proprietary driver qhich ultimately mean painful install (and, most importantly, updates). I'd love to hear about other options, though. Checking the recently revamped linuxprinting.org will help too.
